I have just installed a new internet browser on my computer. Flock.

I Flock

As I have explained before installing on Ubuntu isn’t always easy. It’s not just a simple ‘double click’ and it will load the installer, you have to run everything through the terminal. I don’t actually mind this to be honest, because it makes me feel smart. ;-)

Anyway, Flock gave me these instructions when I downloaded it:

Flock is not yet packaged for any Linux distribution (with the notable exception of Ultima Linux).

Before you install Flock on Linux, please note:

* The Flock binaries are only for GNU/Linux on x86
* libstdc++5 is required

Follow these steps to install:

1. Open a terminal window and use the “cd” command to navigate to the directory that contains the flock tarball file
2. tar xzf flock-0.4.6-en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz
3. cd flock
4. ./flock

Flock should now be open and ready to use.

Like hell it was. Excuse my ‘noob-ey-ness’ but I did that it just… didn’t work. And I didn’t know what I could do to make it work. I am definitely a noob at Linux, and when they say use the “cd” command- I don’t know what that is. So after googling it and trying to work it out I decided that I am better off just asking in some forum and hoping that someone will actually check it and reply.

Well, I tell you what, this forum is in bookmarks and there to stay because It was only an hour and a half and someone had replied. You can see the process that I went through to get it sorted out on that forum link. But it wasn’t that simple. Everyone’s replies were great, but I still had to work it out a bit for myself. Try new things and ways and remember what I had done before.

If you have a linux OS, and you need to install Flock I’m pretty confident that I could show you how. Want me to briefly explain? Here goes:

Download package and open in archive opener. Extract the file, which will make a new folder.

Open the terminal. Type in “cd(space)/home/talia” or wherever you put it. I put mine in the home folder, which now know is called Talia…

Type in “ls” (that’s the letter after k, and then the letter after r. Okay?) That will give you a list of everything in that file.

type “cd flock”, and then ./flock

This is what it looks like in the terminal:

talia@talia-laptop:~$ cd /home/talia
talia@talia-laptop:~$ ls
Desktop flock picasa_2.2.2820-5_i386.deb
Documents flock-0.7.11.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz PicasaDocuments
Examples Music Pictures
talia@talia-laptop:~$ cd flock
talia@talia-laptop:~/flock$ ./flock

So many thanks goes to bryansmith, devils_casper and zba78, because without their help I would still be unable to view my Uni’s website in Firefox!
